This 112-hour course is designed for those students wishing to pursue a career in towing. The Apprentice Mate (Steersman) license is required if you want to operate any towing vessel up to 200 tons.
The Apprentice Mate (Steersman) course is what the mariner will need, with appropriate sea service, to work towards a Mate and Master of Towing license. Upon successful completion of this course, each student will receive a copy of the Towing Officer's Assessment Record (TOAR) for completion on board towing vessels. Along with appropriate sea service, the TOAR is required for advancement to Mate and Master of Towing Vessels. No further testing will be required.
The course covers all of the topics in the OUPV, Master, 100 Tons and Master, 200 Tons courses, plus provides detailed instruction on every aspect of towing operations.
Upon completion of the course, students take a USCG-approved exam right here at AMA. A certificate of completion will be given if the student successfully passes the exam. The student can then submit that certificate, along with the other application requirements listed below, in order to be evaluated for issuance of the license.
REQUIREMENTS:
Sea service: 540 days of total service, including 360 days on towing vessels AND 90 days for each particular route.
