Master, 200 GRT/500 GT

The Master, 200 GRT (500 GT) license is required if you want to operate any INSPECTED (or uninspected) vessel up to 200 tons that can carry more than six paying passengers, plus crew. The term "inspected" means that the vessel adheres to the Coast Guard's stringent Commercial Vessel Inspection standards for design and equipment. These vessels hold a Certificate of Inspection (COI) stating the number of passengers and area of operation. Such vessels are often ferries, small freighters, research vessels, large yachts, etc.

Like the 100 Ton Master license, the Master, 200 Ton license is also issued for a particular route, depending on where you gained your seagoing experience, as follows:

INLAND/RIVERS – Restricted to operation on all inland waters excluding the Great Lakes.

NEAR COASTAL – Allows for operation up to 200 nautical miles offshore.

GREAT LAKES/INLAND – Similar to the Inland license, but requires at least 90 days of service on the Great Lakes.

Additionally, the 200 Ton license is broken down into two categories, depending on the size of the vessels on which you've sailed over the last three years. You'll be issued one for 150 tons or 200 tons. The 150 ton license can be upgraded to 200 tons – without retesting - as you gain experience on the appropriate larger vessels.

The 108-hour Master, 200 Tons course expands upon those subject areas covered in the Master, 100 Tons course, plus cover advanced stability, cargo handling, advanced plotting, and Rules of the Road

Upon completion of the course, students take a USCG-approved exam right here at AMA. A certificate of completion will be given if the student successfully passes the exam. The student can then submit that certificate, along with the other application requirements listed below, in order to be evaluated for issuance of the license.
